As we wrote in one of our recent reports, the disappearance of a normal, carefree childhood is one of the most difficult mental stresses for children in Syria to deal with. There are also many additional traumatizing experiences they may face, such as the loss of their parents or a general attitude of societal indifference towards them.
Moreover, we have noticed growing animosities between locally-based families and those families who have fled from other parts of Syria to northern Syria. Social envy is the unfortunate consequence of international politics, which does not seem to have an adequate response. Our local teams in north Syria have started various programs with the goal of bringing both local and refugee children together in order to negate the effects of these two tendencies.
In Tirbespî, our team has invited families from both backgrounds to come with their children to our UKSSD center to spend the day together and get to know each other.
The day began with introductory games between our team members and the children. Various drawing games were then played in several smaller groups. Of course, there was also lots of time spent on singing and dancing together with the parents. At the end all children gathered for watching several cartoon movie series together.
Missing childhood and social envy are both serious conditions which can still be encountered quite easily.
