Summary About This Project

DOZ started the project Kurdish Film Days in Leipzig, Germany since year 2015 by voluntary group of DOZ members and students in Leipzig to contribute to diversity of cultures in the city of Leipzig, bring new colors from Kurdish culture and history through cinema to the citizens and people living in Leipzig, and be part of enriching the cultural diversity and development in the city of Leipzig. Since then, DOZ plans and presents the event Kurdish Film Days in Leipzig each year. If you need any information or want to contribute to this event don’t hesitate to contact us.

The project is funded through DOZ donations, various donors each year, and supported by the City of Leipzig.

Kurdish Film Days in Leipzig 2024

The Kurdish Film Days 2024 in Leipzig will start on 01.May.2024 and end on 04.May.2024.

The event for the year 2024 will take place in Ost-Passage Kino and in Cineding in Leipzig.

A German film team is shooting a documentary in northeastern Turkey. In a remote Kurdish village, they witness an elderly woman performing a recurring ritual to keep the memory of her missing son alive. The Kurdish translator of the German crew is also the nanny of Melek, a 7-year-old Turkish girl. Her father, Zafer, works for a sinister organization and is caught between loyalty to them and fear for his family’s well-being when his daughter appears to be haunted by a mysterious force. The fateful encounter of these people develops a destructive power. IN THE BLIND SPOT unravels a complex net of conspiracy, paranoia and generational trauma.

Im Jahr 2014 werden Tausende von Jesidinnen vom sogenannten Islamischen Staat entführt und in die sexuelle Sklaverei gezwungen. Nach ihrer Freilassung ist Ana gezwungen, das Baby, das sie nach der Vergewaltigung bekommen hat, auszusetzen. Alle Kinder, die nach Vergewaltigungen durch die Dschihadisten geboren wurden, galten als “Bastarde” und wurden aus der jesidischen Gemeinschaft verstoßen. Nach vier Jahren der Trennung durchquert “Ana” heimlich Kurdistan, um ihre Tochter Marya zu sehen.

In 2014, thousands of Yazidi women are kidnapped by Daech and reduced to sexual slavery. Upon her release, Ana is forced to abandon the baby she had as a result of being raped. Considered as “bastards”, all children born from the rapes by the jihadists were rejected away from the Yazidi community. After four years of separation, “Ana” crosses Kurdistan, in secret, to see her daughter Marya.

Hazal erfährt eine Job-Ablehnung nach der anderen. An ihrem 18. Geburtstag will sie die Sorgen vergessen und mit ihren Freundinnen feiern gehen. Doch auch dort wird sie abgewiesen. Als sie sich frustriert auf den Heimweg macht, wird sie belästigt. Die Situation eskaliert und Hazal muss fliehen.

Hazal is 17 and lives in Berlin. Her biggest wish: to be given a chance. For her 18th birthday she wants to escape the everyday grind and party with her friends. But a fatal incident changes everything, and Hazal is forced to flee. “ELBOW” tells the story of a young woman who is pushed to the margins of society and is determined to remain true to herself.

Die jesidischen Mädchen waren oft erst Teenager, als sie von Kämpfern des Islamischen Staates aus ihren Dörfern in den Bergen Kurdistans entführt wurden. Sie wurden mit Gewalt zum Islam bekehrt und als Sexsklavinnen an Terroristen verkauft. Nun, da die Überlebenden in ihre Heimat zurückkehren, stellt sich die Frage, ob es ihnen gelingen wird, einen Neuanfang zu wagen. Der Theatermacher Hussein versucht, ihnen zu helfen, ein neues Leben zu finden.

The Yazidi girls were often just teenagers when they were abducted from their villages in the mountains of Kurdistan by fighters of Islamic State. They were converted to Islam by force, were sold as sex slaves for terrorists. Now that the survivors return to their homeland, the question arises if they will manage to start anew. Theatre-maker Hussein tries to help them to find a new life.

Kawa Nemir ist wie ein wandelndes Wörterbuch der kurdischen Sprache. Unaufhörlich nimmt er neue Wörter und Redewendungen seiner Muttersprache auf. Er betrachtet die Sprache als sein Zuhause, während er von einem Exil zum anderen wandert. Die Übersetzung von James Joyces Ulysses ins Kurdische wird für ihn zu einer brennenden Leidenschaft, da sie eine riesige, unendliche Bandbreite an Wörtern, Symbolen und antikolonialer Resonanz bietet. Er lässt die politischen Unruhen und seine Lieben hinter sich und zieht von der Türkei in die Niederlande. Kawa findet Zuflucht in Anne Franks ehemaligem Haus in Amsterdam, in dem sie mit dem Schreiben ihres Tagebuchs begann und das heute als Wohnsitz für Exilschriftsteller dient. Wird es ihm gelingen, die Übersetzung von Ulysses zu veröffentlichen?

Kawa Nemir is like a walking dictionary of Kurdish language. He incessantly records new words and idioms of his mother tongue. He considers language his home as he wanders from one exile to another. With its vast, infinite range of words, symbols and anti-colonial resonance, translating James Joyce’s Ulysses into Kurdish becomes a burning passion for him. Leaving political turmoil and his loved ones behind he moves from Turkey to the Netherlands. Kawa takes refuge at Anne Frank’s former house in Amsterdam, where she started writing her diary, now serving as residence for exiled writers. Will he be able to publish the translation of Ulysses?

ALLIHOPA, das schwedische Wort für “alle zusammen”, begleitet Dalkurd, die kurdisch-schwedische Fußballmannschaft, die ursprünglich von kurdischen Geflüchteten in Schweden als soziales Projekt gegründet wurde, bei ihrem Versuch, europäische Fußballgeschichte zu schreiben. Der Film erkundet die persönliche Reise dieser bemerkenswerten Menschen sowie die größeren Probleme des historisch anhaltenden Rassismus und der Fremdenfeindlichkeit gegenüber einem stolzen Volk, das seit über hundert Jahren nach Unabhängigkeit und einer Heimat sucht.

ALLIHOPA, the Swedish word for “all together”, follows Dalkurd, the KurdishSwedish soccer team originally founded by Kurdish refugees in Sweden as a social project, as they try to make European soccer history. The film explores the personal journeys of these remarkable refugees, as well as the bigger issues of historically persistent racism and xenophobia against a proud people who have been searching for independence and a homeland for over a hundred years.

Yesim, Bella and Nati suddenly have five minutes of fame with a spontaneous Youtube video. Wearing full-face veils, they perform R.E.M.’s hit Losing my Religion anew and somehow they hit a nerve. Talk shows as well as conservative Islamic weddings are buzzing about the girls from Vienna. Yesim’s father Omar (wonderfully funny played by Kurdwin Ayub’s own father) is their biggest fan. Brother Kerim just thinks it’s ridiculous and prefers to hang out with his half-strong boys. When a couple of Kurdish guys make advances on the schoolgirls, the subtly pent-up conflicts escalate to the full.

In der Universitätsstadt Slemani in der Autonomen Region Kurdistan Irak bereitet sich Rojin auf die Schulabschlussprüfungen vor, die darüber entscheiden, ob sie studieren kann oder nicht. Die junge Frau ist jedoch gelähmt vom unaufgeklärten Verschwinden ihres Freundes. Weil ihr Vater mit einer Zwangsheirat droht, versucht ihre ältere Schwester Shilan – selbst gefangen in einer lieblosen Ehe – ihr dieses Schicksal durch ein Studium zu ersparen. Dafür lässt sie sich mit einem Netzwerk aus Betrügern ein, die Hilfe beim Betrug gegen Geld anbieten. Auf obskure Weise legt Shawkat Amin Korki (Memories on Stone) die sozialen Dimensionen und Mentalitäten dieses Systems offen.

In the university town of Slemani in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan Iraq, Rojin is preparing for the final school exams. Because her father is threatening Rojin with a forced marriage, her older sister Shilan – herself trapped in a loveless marriage – tries to spare her this fate by being able to study. To do so, she gets involved with a network of scammers.

Mit seinen jüdischen Nachbarn verbindet ihn eine behutsame Freundschaft, deren Bedeutung umso wichtiger wird, als sich der aggressive Nationalismus des Regimes Hafiz al-Assads immer stärker bemerkbar macht. Über die Figur des kleinen Jungen setzt sich der syrisch-schweizerische Filmemacher Mano Khalil mit seiner Kindheit in einem mehrheitlich kurdischen Dorf an der Grenze zwischen Syrien und der Türkei auseinander. Durch Witz, Zuneigung und einen differenzierten Blick zeichnet er ein bewegendes Porträt wenig beachteter Schicksale.

A small village 40 years ago on the Syrian-Turkish border – little Sero experiences his first year at Arab school, plays cheeky pranks with his comrades and dreams of a television. On the Sabbath, he is allowed to light the lights of his Jewish neighbours. At the same time, he has to experience how the adults are increasingly crushed by nationalism. A warm satire with a fine sense of humour.

In DREAMS’ GATE begibt sich die iranische Regisseurin Negin Ahmadi auf eine Reise von Teheran in das Kampfgebiet Nordsyriens, um zu verstehen, was es bedeutet, eine Frau zu sein. Allein mit ihrer Kamera setzt sie sich an der Front gegen den IS mit sich selbst und dem stärksten zeitgenössischen Mythos von weiblicher Stärke und Freiheit auseinander: Kurdische Kämpferinnen. Entstanden ist ein einzigartiges Filmtagebuch voller Leerstellen, aufschlussreicher Missverständnisse und unerwarteter Direktheiten.

In DREAMS’ GATE Iranian female director Negin Ahmadi starts a personal journey into the combat zone of North Syria to question what it means to be a woman. Alone with her camera, she decides to look for an answer by encountering the women who embody the strongest contemporary myth of female strength and freedom: Kurdish female fighters.

Der Dokumentarfilmer Rahim Zabihi porträtiert in HOLY BREAD die gefährliche Arbeit kurdischer Kulbars. Diese versuchen ihre Familien durch den Transport von Waren über die Grenze zu unterstützen. In einer verarmten, vom iranischen Staat strukturell vernachlässigten Region haben die Männer keine andere Wahl, als ihre Körper den Strapazen und Gefahren auszusetzen. Über neun Jahre arbeitete das Team von Zabihi an diesem beeindruckenden Film, der erst nach der ungeklärten Ermordung des Regisseurs seine internationale Premiere erlebte.

In HOLY BREAD, documentary filmmaker Rahim Zabihi portrays the dangerous work of Kurdish Kulbars. They try to support their families by transporting goods across the border. The film team worked for more than nine years on this impressive film, which only had its international premiere after the unsolved murder of the director.

Elaha ist kurz vor ihrer Hochzeit damit konfrontiert, dass ihr Umfeld die Erwartungshaltung eines intakten Jungfernhäutchens an sie heranträgt, was die junge Deutsch-Kurdin in eine existentielle Krise stürzt. Immer unmittelbarer erfährt sie Unschuld und Jungfräulichkeit als Konzepte, die über den weiblichen Körper patriarchale Machtstrukturen verfestigen. Elaha beginnt zunehmend, diese Dynamiken zu hinterfragen und behält dabei doch eine tiefe Wertschätzung für viele Aspekte ihrer kurdischen Herkunft. Die Vielschichtigkeit in den Beweggründen Elahas spielt Darstellerin Bayan Layla überaus nuanciert, zweifelnd, verletzbar und elektrisierend selbstbestimmt zugleich. (Kurdische Filmtage Leipzig)

Shortly before her wedding, Elaha is confronted with the situation that her environment expects her to have an intact hymen. She experiences innocence and virginity more and more as concepts that reinforce patriarchal power structures via the female body. Elaha increasingly begins to question these dynamics, yet retains a deep appreciation for many aspects of her Kurdish culture.   

NAMO – THE ALIEN

Zwei unbekannte Männer beginnen täglich in einer ansonsten gewöhnlichen iranischen Nachbarschaft zu parken. Sind sie vom iranischen Geheimdienst? Wem gelten ihre Observationen? Unter den Menschen entwickelt sich eine Welle der Paranoia und des Misstrauens. Gilt die Überwachung Bakhtiar, einem kurdischen Lehrer, der als Neuankömmling mit seiner Familie in der Stadt lebt? Ein politischer Film, dessen nachhaltige Kraft sich nicht zuletzt über eine feine Montage und ein kluges, facettenreiches Drehbuch des unbeugsam-kritischen Jafar Panahi entfaltet.

Two unknown men start parking daily in an otherwise ordinary Iranian neighbourhood. A wave of paranoia and mistrust develops among the people. Is the surveillance aimed at Bakhtiar, a Kurdish teacher who lives with his family in the city as a newcomer? A political film whose lasting power unfolds not least through a fine montage and a clever, multi-faceted screenplay by the persistently critical Jafar Panahi.

Kurdish Film Days 2019 in Leipzig

Dear people and residents of our beautiful city Leipzig. We are very happy to announce the program of Kurdish Film Days 2019 in Leipzig. By the way, our first edition of Kurdish Film Days Leipzig in 2015 had THE BEEKEEPER by Mano Khalil at its opening night. At our 5th anniversary of Kurdish Film Days Leipzig 2019, we will present another film by Mano Khalil called THE SWALLOW on 27th of November, 9.15 pm in Cineding cinema Leipzig. Please note: The film is German/Kurdish with German subs. But all other films of the festival have English subs! The films will be presented in two areas this time, Cineding cinema in West Leipzig, and UT Connewitz cinema in South Leipzig.

In This Year we have a big surprise for you. We will have a big Kurdish dance party organized by the team of Xelata DOZ Project, which is another dance project by DOZ in Germany. The solidarity party will take place in UT Connewitz.

Kurdish Film Days 2018 in Leipzig

We are proud to announce the Kurdish Film Days 2018 in Leipzig. In this year we cover several topics including the film about the crimes against Yezidi minorities and Kurdish communities by ISIS. We also focus on the role of Kurdish Women Fighters in the liberation battles against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Kurdish Film Days 2017 in Leipzig

The Kurdish Film Days 2017 in Leipzig presents feature films and documentaries at CINEDING Cinema in Plagwitz, Leipzig.

At the opening there will be a talk with Hawre Zangana on the topic of “Childhood on the Run”. The Munich-based theater pedagogue has been working for years in intercultural projects on the topics of refuge, displacement, childhood and overcoming trauma.

All films will be shown in the original language with German or English subtitles.

Kurdish Film Days 2015 in Leipzig

We are happy to announce the Kurdish Film Days!

From November 12 to 14, 2015 we will show seven different films from different parts of Kurdistan and also from the diaspora at the Cineding Leipzig (Karl-Heine-Straße 83). With this event we want to show a range of wonderful Kurdish cinematic art, but also offer insights into the traditional and multi-layered Kurdish cultures. Thereby, a dialogue not only about, but also with these cultures shall be stimulated, enriched, and created.

All residents of the city of Leipzig are invited. We are looking forward to seeing you!

Besides the films, there will be Kurdish food, music, and a talk with the director Beston Zirian. We are also happy to be able to show the premiere of his film “A Shirt for the Feast”.
